DOMINIQUE LAURENT
Dominique Laurent, a former pastry chef with a passion for winemaking, embarked on his journey as a Negociant in 1988, and today he is renowned for offering a diverse range of appellations in limited quantities. Guided by a straightforward philosophy, Laurent seeks out exceptional plots of vineyards cultivated by skilled vignerons, with a particular emphasis on old vines. These carefully selected vineyards form the foundation of his wines, which undergo the essential stages of elevage, bottling, and commercialization under Laurent's watchful eye.
Recognizing the pivotal role of oak in the maturation process, Laurent was determined to utilize only the finest barrels. In pursuit of this vision, he established his own cooperage, meticulously handpicking Troncais wood and personally overseeing the air-drying process. This commitment to craftsmanship extends beyond his own wine production, as Laurent also supplies oak barrels to a select group of esteemed winemakers across different regions.
While Laurent's wines have previously faced criticism for their perceived oak dominance, it is evident that perceptions have evolved over time. Recent endorsements from respected critics like Allan Meadows, who previously held reservations about his style, testify to the transformation of Laurent's wines. The evolution of his winemaking approach, along with a shifting reception from critics, has sparked a newfound appreciation for his unique expressions of terroir.
In addition to his Negociant business, Dominique Laurent has further expanded his vinous endeavors by establishing his own Domaine in 2006. Teaming up with his son Jean Laurent, they acquired the esteemed vineyards of Haegelen-Jayer in Vosne, expanding their holdings to 12 hectares. While Jean Laurent primarily manages the operations of the Domaine, Dominique's expertise and passion continue to influence the wines they produce, adding a dynamic element to their family venture.
